A Hosho Moment I’ll Always Hold Close

Some moments feel soft and loud at the same time. This was one of them.

I was truly honored to show iShowSpeed how to play hosho at Mbare Art Space, Zimbabwe during his Speed Does Africa tour. Standing there with him.. sharing rhythm, laughter, and curiosity.. felt intimate in the simplest, most human way.

This was a beautiful collaboration between the MIB Marimba Band and myself. No rush, no overthinking. Just hands learning the weight of the hosho, ears adjusting to the pulse, and smiles doing their own thing. He was such a vibe; fully present, genuinely interested, and clearly impressed by the sound… and yes, by my hair too 🥹. That little moment made me feel seen in a way I didn’t expect.

These photos capture exactly how it felt: warm, playful, grounded. Just me and him in the middle of culture being exchanged.. not explained, not forced, just felt.

This is why I do what I do. Because when culture is shared with love, it becomes memory. And this one? I’ll carry it with me for a very long time.
